Jalan Raya Pos/De Groote Postweg

Documentary, 1996, 155 min.

Road-movie-like documentary about the Great Post Road. Pramudya Ananta Tur (1925), one of Indonesia's most important writers in recent decades, was requested by Bernie IJdis to write an essay about the Great Post Road. This road running 600 miles through the heart of Java was built in the last century under the leadership of Dutch colonist Daendels and costs the lives of thousands of East Indian forced labourers. Because Tur is restricted in his freedom of movement as an ex-political prisoner, the filmmakers were his eyes and ears during a journey along the Post Road. On the journey, parallels between Indonesia then and now gradually emerged. In addition, as the film progresses, Tur's desperate plight and that of his country become tangible.
