Ocalia

Short documentary, 1995, 30 min.

Documentary about the life and work of the Antillian artist Hipólito Ocalia. He was 49 when people chanced upon his naïve paintings. He had no ideas about art and being an artist, he broke through within only a few years and managed to interest a large audience in his work. In contrast with the uncomplicated cheerfulness of his paintings, Ocalia was a reserved man. In his remote shed, he created his own sunny world, inspired by the colourful landscape around him. Diary fragments, pictures of his work, tracks in the landscape and reminiscences by his wife and several admirers are used to bring to life Ocalia's special and colourful world.
