Getuige 1 minuut

Short documentary, 2010, 59 min.

82 seconds of mobile phone footage that were first posted on the site of the AD daily and later on GeenStijl.nl shocks the Netherlands. There is a row and a fall from a roof. Somebody dies. On the basis of the blurred images, shown on TV talk shows and elsewhere, people promptly vented their opinions. The 'Scheveningen roof killing' in January 2007 changed the lives of people directly involved and their neighbours and raised the challenging question whether new media exceed boundaries.
Commissioned by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, as part of the Dutch Documentary Collection series, filmmaker Hans Heijnen made a meticulous reconstruction of the events. He speaks with witnesses to the killing and visits the crime scene in Scheveningen, the offender, his father and the trial where the tape serves as evidence. With the aid of the Institute?s archives, Getuige 1 minuut explores the role of the media in the representation of the killing and the effect it had on parties concerned.
