Ulay - In Photography

Short documentary, 1997, 58 min.

The artist Ulay (a pseudonym for Uwe Laysiepen) was born in Germany in 1943. He gained worldwide fame with performances with his former wife Marina Abramovic, but the photographic oeuvre of Ulay remained almost unknown. Filmmaker Marjoleine Boonstra made a poetic narrative film about the artist who continually extended his boundaries in a quest for new photographic forms.
From this view the film shows the obscure and shocking photos that Ulay took after he left Germany for Amsterdam in 1968 for moral reasons. We also see how he prepares for an exhibition in Berlin and the camera witnesses in Australia a nocturnal Aboriginal ceremony as homage to his old teacher 'Charlie' Watuma Taruru Chapalchari.
