Campus Vught

Documentary, 2003, 90 min.

Documentary dedicated to Campus Vught, a refugee centre for single minor asylum seekers (AMAs). Everything is targeted to their departure: they are discourageAC Dutch (don't even watch Dutch TV) and the AMAs are not allowed to leave the grounds. To make sure they will not return empty-handed, they are motivated by means of a scoring system to learn to speak English or use the computer. At least, that was the idea. In this shocking documentary, we see how this set-up fails utterly. The Dutch bargaining culture, bureaucracy and good intentions clash with the rigid approach the legislators in The Hague have opted for and the indifference and autonomy of the AMAs: `I don't consider this a campus, but a prison.' Moreover, the law hardly allows for any sanctions. The media were barred from the campus ground, but the filmmaker attended all proceedings from the start, like a fly on the wall.
