Café Chris

-, 2000, 59 min.

Documentary about Café Chris, one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam's Jordaan district. Founded in 1624, it has always been a typical local bar. It is a meeting place for the few remaining old working-class Jordan inhabitants and also for students. What makes the bar so special is that the typical working-class culture of the Jordaan, as serenaded in the tear-jerkers, is still thriving. For eighteen months, Meral Uslu followed the ups and downs of the bar, its regulars and the barman. The barkeeper Fred Zandvliet has lymphatic cancer and is in danger of losing his bar. Things gradually start going downhill for the barkeeper and his bar and its sale appears inevitable. His suffering seems to be reflected in the sentimental songs that can be heard in the bar.
