Dat het paradijs voor mij zal zijn

Short documentary, 2005, 54 min.

`There are times I think it's a curse to be so bright,' laments Rabia from Breda, who has been married to an Islamic man for ten years. During an Islam quiz with other moslim women, she vents her annoyance with Dutch women's superficial herd behaviour: `Jesus, think for yourself, man!' When a fellow believer points out that some people will say the same thing about her, Rabia's face sets.
This documentary follows three originally Dutch women who have been converted to Islam and are now manoeuvring between two cultures. They think quite differently about polygamy, homosexuality and sex before marriage. For Dutch families, the rigid clothing precepts are a bone of contention. `In my case, some things are left to the imagination,' the 23-year-old Astrid says smilingly about the dark garment that hides her body from peeking men's eyes. After a pilgrimage to Mecca, Rabia wants to leave everything to the imagination - she covers her face with a veil. Inge also takes Islam a step further after she has moved to Cairo with her Egyptian man.
