Herengracht 401

Short documentary, 2016, 48 min.

In World War II, the imposing canal-side house on Herengracht 401 in Amsterdam used to be a place of hiding. After the war, this period of hiding brought forth a close-knit artists’ community. But now that the founder and patroness has died and the money for maintenance is almost finished, the current residents want to give the house a new purpose. While they clean and renovate the building so they can open it to the public, filmmaker Janina Pigaht wants to record the story of the house before it is too late. But is there an unequivocal story to be told?
