Mathilde Willink superpoes

Short documentary, 2002, 53 min.

Several decades after her demise, the extravagant and mystifying Mathilde Willink (1938-1977) appears to be far from forgotten. Supported by relevant historical footage, filmmakers Jasmina Fekovic and Eddie van der Velden introduce contemporaries and faithful followers, who talk about the life and death of Mathilde, who particularly acquired fame by marrying the magic-realist painter Carel Willink (1900-1983). At his side, the Zeeland-born Mathilda de Doelder started creating her personal fairytale, partly by wearing the eccentric creations of fashion designer Fong Leng. `When people don't notice you, you may as well not exist', was her self-evident motto, which she stood by until her tragic end. On 25 October 1977, the woman `that was maintained by Amsterdam' was found dead in her canopy bed. It remains unsolved whether it involved murder or suicide.
