Het meer der herinnering

Documentary, 1994, 71 min.

Report of a journey made by essayist Rudy Kousbroek through North Sumatra, the area where he was born in 1929 and that he was forced to leave in 1946. The journey led him to the plantation where Kousbroek's parents lived, the boarding schools where he was brought up and the concentration camps where he was imprisoned during the Japanese occupation. Kousbroek's personal memories acquire a broader significance as he put them into the context of colonial relations at that time. The writer also aims to provide an insight into the process of remembering and its importance for our personal and collective history. Pictures of contemporary Indonesia are juxtaposed in the documentary with photos and a family film from the personal archive of Rudy Kousbroek.
