Ik zag ruimte

Documentary, 2009, 72 min.

Ik zag ruimte is a personal documentary about Dutch architect Herman Hertzberger (1932), who designed the Chassé Theatre in Breda and both the old and new Music Centres in Utrecht. His wife, his children, talking about him with affection, his associates and friends (including Abraham de Swaan) shed light on this 'little man'. Hertzberger made a reputation as a designer who was critical of modernism. He considered the human measure paramount. He applied this principle to his design of the head office of Centraal Beheer and to various schools, mostly for Montessori education.
Incorporating images of Hertzberger delving through his archive and listening to music, visiting buildings he designed, showing the place where his wife had a traffic accident and attending meetings about his design for a school, gradually a portrait emerges of this idealistic and driven man, who is considered one of the most prominent post-war architects.
