Kurt Gerrons Karussell

Documentary, 1999, 65 min.

Documentary about the tragic life of Berlin's famous 1920' actor and cabaret artiest Kurt Gerron (1897-1944). In the 1930's he directed films in Holland, among them the successful Merijntje Gijsen's jeugd. His Jewish extraction meant he was deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp, were he formed the cabaret group Karussell with various musicians, singers and actors. Gerron was brought to the gas chambers in Auschwitz in 1944. Alongside historic footage and fragments from Gerron's films, we hear from various famous contemporaries - including Ute Lemper and Max Raab - who talk about and sing songs from Gerron's Karusell.
