Jean Rhys - En de vrouw is een vreemde

Documentary, 1997, 70 min.

The writer Jean Rhys was born in 1890 on the Caribbean island of Dominica. As a teenager she left for England where she worked as a dancer and ended up on the fringes of prostitution. In the Thirties she left for Paris where the writers of The Lost Generation shaped the literary climate. In that period she published her first stories and novels in which she wrote openly about the seamy side of life, sexuality, abortion, failed relationships, drinking and loneliness. It was only after World War Two, when Rhys lived in a remote village in Devon, that the novel appeared that was to make her famous: Wide Sargasso Sea. In it she returned to Dominica, the paradise of her youth.
