Stories from Lakka Beach

Documentary, 2011, 74 min.

Lakka Beach in Sierra Leone is a picturesque town on the Atlantic coast. The gorgeous beaches of this community, originally consisting of fishermen, allured tourists in droves in the 1970s and 1980s. However, during the civil war, the lively tourist industry came to a halt. Holidaymakers still avoid the country and villagers from Lakka Beach now try to make ends meet. The film follows some inhabitants of this heavenly, but largely ruined place. People including a musician, a fisherman and a woodworker talk about their lives, the scourges of war, the reconstruction and the hope for a better future for their children. The camera meanwhile pans along colourful skies, the calm sea, pristine beaches and waving palms that frame the village.
