Max Havelaar

Feature film, 1976, 170 min.

This Dutch-Indonesian co-production is an adaptation of Multatuli's novel from 1859. Peter Faber plays Dutch civil servant Max Havelaar, who is appointed to take up office in the colonised Dutch East Indies. He sees how the affluent Dutch coffee traders and local regents exploit and oppress the poor native population. He is so concerned about these people's fate that, against the custom, he lodges protest against the way they are treated. Until 1987, this film was blacklisted in Indonesia, because the feudal regents in the film were not only Dutchmen, but also Indonesians.
