Land zonder koning

Short documentary, 2009, 52 min.

What will his motherland look like today? Will it smell and feel the same as it used to? 85 Years old, Papua leader Nicolaas Jouwe returns to native soil for the first time in 47 years. Since 1962, from the Netherlands, Jouwe has been fighting for his dream: an independent Papua. Actually, he did not want to return before that dream had come true. But he sees an invitation from the Indonesian president as an opportunity to go before that. His son, daughter and a handful of former freedom fighters in his wake, he travels to his old village via Jakarta. Once in Indonesia, his visit causes a media hype, which is boosted by his twittering son and Internetting daughter. Through these media, they inform the world about all the ins and outs of the visit. The key question, of course, is whether Jouwe is going to abandon his ideal of freedom. Jouwe, meanwhile, remains calm. He chiefly wonders where his pin has gone with the Papuan flag he designed and he finds out that in Papua, too, people are fighting for 'his' cause.
