Higgs, Into the Heart of Imagination

Short documentary, 2009, 54 min.

The Swiss-French border is the location of the biggest laboratory in the world: CERN, a European organisation that carries out fundamental research of elementary particles. Hannie van den Bergh and Jan van den Berg follow an international group of scientists - including Dutchmen - who are involved in unravelling what one of them calls 'a modern mystery': the Higgs particle. It is an elementary particle that has been predicted by Peter Higgs, but has not been perceived yet. To make the standard model of particle physics tally, the researchers not only work with various theories, but also with the most powerful particle accelerator on earth. Prof. dr. Stan Bentvelsen, programme leader of the Dutch research group National Institute for Subatomic Physics (Nikhef), talks about it with ardour. Like his colleagues, who try to unravel the secret by means of formulas and discussions. Preferably as fast as possible, because the scientific world witnesses a race for the discovery of the Higgs field that, the interviewed researchers claim, might not even exist.
