Wij wonen nu in Drachten

Documentary, 2008, 65 min.

The Somali refugee Khadra was afraid her three missing children were dead, but after five years, in 2003, she could press them in her arms, after all. From a refugee camp, the children move to the Netherlands, to the Frisian town of Drachten. Said (13), Sadiya (15), Abdelkadir (17) and their mother hope for a happy life in a country without war, now the reunification is a fact. But you cannot simply take the war out of a human being. Said grows increasingly rebellious, he smokes dope and drinks a lot, which causes aggressive behaviour. Khadra does not know how to cope with her youngest son. Sadiya, meanwhile, is weighed down by distress she has not yet dealt with and that reveals itself to the family in Holland. Van Dijck followed the traumatised family for five years, in which one heart-rending situation succeeds another. Due to recent changes in the immigration law, Said runs the risk of being deported on account of maladjusted behaviour. The realistic portrait follows mother and children to language classes, consultations with mentors, conversations with social workers and at home.
