Dear Oprah: Non-voting America's Wildest Dream

Short documentary, 2008, 52 min.

The turnout at American elections is traditionally one of the lowest in the world: around sixty percent. Filmmaker Kasper Verkaik wants to know why. He travels all over the United States, looking for the motives of non-voters. They vary from indifference and lack of trust to more practical arguments: in some poor neighbourhoods, it is made very hard for people to vote. Verkaik also meets the man who set up an organisation to urge TV icon Oprah Winfrey to stand for office. She responded she does not want to get involved in politics, but nonetheless Verkaik sees an important task for Oprah. She could convince her viewers to register to vote. Dear Oprah is not only an investigative road movie (with an important part for the occasionally unreliable camper), but also a plea, a letter in sound and image, to one of America's leading opinion makers.
