Groeten uit Lelystad

Documentary, 2011, 70 min.

What defines the soul of a city? The genesis of Lelystad could be called dramatic. At the time, it was the prefect chance for the Netherlands to build a completely new city, on the seabed. The city in Oostelijk Flevoland was named after Cornelis Lely, the spiritual father of the Zuiderzee Works (reclamation of the Zuiderzee). Eastern Flevoland was the third polder in Plan Lely. Expectations were high. On 28 September 1967, the first people came to live here, making Lelystad one of the youngest cities of the Netherlands.
Was Lelystad successful? An unequivocal answer is impossible to give. But the question is interesting and opens the possibility to make a layered, poetic, cinematic account in which a number of Lelystad inhabitants make the city tangible and understandable. The documentary deals with ideals and their practical realisation. And, not in the last places, with how Holland functions when it comes to the tension field between dream and act.
