I Am a Woman Now

Documentary, 2012, 86 min.

'Can every man become a beautiful woman?', filmmaker Michiel van Erp asks the aged April, a gorgeous woman who used to be a man. She is one of the flamboyant protagonists in this documentary about transsexuals who in the mid 20th century underwent a sex operation. For this surgery, highly controversial at the time, they went to Casablanca, where they were helped by the unorthodox surgeon Burou. The different women from Germany, England, Belgium and the Netherlands talk about their experiences in those days, their admiration of Burou and their exuberant and at times tragic lives, often illustrated by photographs and other archive material. They are also followed travelling to friends, guiding young transsexuals and on a pilgrimage to Casablanca, where they were reborn.
