Wreed geluk. Claus, Vlaanderen & de liefde

Documentary, 2009, 63 min.

Hugo Claus' sonorous voice resounds in his hymn Nu nog, which is recited by Claus himself, but also by his Flemish cronies, like Roger Raveel, Jeff Geeraerts, Pjeroo Roobjee, Jan Decleir, Fred Bervoets and his brother Odo. The voices are repeatedly intermingled, producing a concerted story of men who shared a love for art, for eloquence, for lust and life. They have control over their vocabulary, like Claus did. The interviewed people bring back memories of their deceased friend and tell anecdotes elucidating the 'multifaceted' personality and passions of Belgium's most famous writer, poet and prominent bon vivant. They express their admiration for the zesty Claus ('You can smell the cunt in his poems') and make the odd statement about his voluntary end ('Against my better judgement, I hoped he wouldn't do it'). And although Hugo Claus is the central figure, the interviewees say just as much about themselves.
