Stedman

Short documentary, 2003, 50 min.

In 1772, the part Dutch, part Scottish John Gabriel Stedman embarks to go to Surinam to fight as a mercenary against rebellious slaves. Already during the voyage, Stedman gets bored and starts a diary, complete with drawings. Until his return to the Netherlands, Stedman keeps adding entries to his journal - about his crush for slave Joanna and the hardships in the impenetrable jungle. More than two centuries later, the Dutch director Leon Giesen and cameraman Marcel Prins follow the adventurer in his footsteps and try to revive as many of Stedman's experiences in the jungle as possible. The observations from the diary are illustrated with images of the events and situations during the present-day trip. Stedman's passion for beautiful women also yields fitting images. So much so that the director bumps into his own camera.
