Niemand is onsterfelijk

Short documentary, 2001, 40 min.

The Petrus Church at a stone's throw from Amsterdam has barely escaped being swallowed up by motorways and giant office blocks. In the churchyard, many generations lie buried. Because of the permanent grave rights, the church has been preserved, but it was forced to adapt to the modern age. The church was partly converted into a party centre; people also sing, dance and play bridge there now. Not everybody is happy with that, as director Leen van den Berg subtly registers. He particularly captures what the people involved think about life and death and how carefully they tend to this remarkable church and graveyard. The title of this documentary was indirectly taken from Simone de Beauvoir's novel of the same name. One of the interviewees explains why he had www.niemandisonsterfelijk.nl engraved on a tombstone.
