Kids & Docs - Plank

Short documentary, 2009, 15 min.

Fifteen-year-old Nassim is not a soccer player or a kick boxer, but a born skater. Every day, this fanatic can be found on the street, working on his perilous stunts. At home, prior to his parents' divorce, things were 'not chill'. Since their separation, Nassim lives with his mother and sisters. While watching video footage from the family archive, Nassim explains the relationship he had with his father. Nassim has the idea his father mainly lectured him, instead of teaching him something. So Nassim takes care of his own future: he becomes a professional skateboarder. This year will be the first he will not go on holiday to Morocco with his mother, because he has to practise for an important skate event: the Grand Prix of Rotterdam. During his preparations, Nassim shows his coolest grabs, spins and war wounds. Because skating is not a gentle sport. But a dreary office job is out of the question for Nassim: 'To me, skating is a steppingstone to another world.' Featuring special competition footage and a soundtrack full of hip hop and folk rock by Cat Stevens.
