The One All Alone

Documentary, 2008, 89 min.

In his lifetime, Edgard Varèse (1883-1965) almost single-handedly turned the existing concept of music upside down. He left only a small oeuvre, but it had been composed unrestricted by the prevailing music schools. Most composers who heard his music for the first time say they were dumbfounded. Obviously, Varèse had left harmony and melody far behind. And where percussion usually had a basic, supporting role in classical music, Varèse put it prominently in the forefront. Where could this music come from? In The One All Alone, director Frank Scheffer tries to elucidate who Edgard Varèse was and give an idea of his sources of inspiration. From the hustle and bustle of the big city to the rhythm of the train passing behind his grandfather's small French house. Scheffer alternates interviews with numerous excerpts of Varèse's music.
