De aardappeleters

Short documentary, 2011, 52 min.

It?s a household word: Nico?s Snackbar in Bezuidenhout, The Hague. The Gillisse family has been running the establishment as long as the locals and regulars can remember. The three brothers explain how their future was already laid down - the snack bar was the extension of their living room and whenever possible they lent a helping hand in the shop. Besides a portrait of a snack bar dynasty, De aardappeleters is a tribute to chips, with stylish images of chips in boiling (now healthy vegetable-based) frying fat and an explanation about the most suitable potatoes (?bintjes?, of course). In addition, the film includes interviews with famous regulars like Golden Earring?s Rinus Gerritse (who plays the occasional bass riff), author Tomas Lieske (who recites from his work) and the daughter of one of the brothers, leaving little hope of continuation of the family business. New film techniques lend some scenes the impression of pencil-coloured paintings.
