Uncle Frank

Short documentary, 1996, 55 min.

Tragi-comic documentary in which director Hans Heijnen goes in search of Dutch emigrants abroad. The film focuses on a South Limburg clan in California and shows how this small ethnic group remains faithful to Dutch-Limburg traditions and customs. In the spirit of the long-forgotten fifties, the emigrants go to church every Sunday and have a weekly evening of cards. Many of the things they are so fond of exist neither in America nor in the country they left. Uncle Frank is not just a film about continual culture shock and losing your roots, but also about Heijnen's own fascination and cultural background.
