Belfast Taxi

Short documentary, 2003, 56 min.

Intriguing documentary on the lingering conflict between the Catholics and the Protestants in Northern Ireland and the effects it has on the daily life in Belfast.

Public transport was one of the first things to suffer from de so-called `Troubles'. Busses were being kidnapped, set on fire or blown up. Taxis did not ride because the drivers were afraid to pass the boundary between the two parts of Belfast.
People had to walk through dangerous zones to get to their work. From all this arose a system of transportation which is unique in the western world. With old black taxis from England residents of the most troubled areas of Belfast started up a transportation service which worked out very well. Based on interviews with the taxi drivers `Belfast Taxi' gives an impression of the hopeless situation in Northern Ireland.
