A forthright search for Robert van Gulik (1910-1967), for what remained and for people whose lives took a turn after getting acquainted with his universe. Van Gulik is globally one of the most read Dutch writers. This diplomat, Sinologist and scholar was known for his historical mystery stories revolving around the character of Judge Dee. In many respects, these novels are projections of his own life. This duality also inspired the form in which this cinematic exploration is cast. Reality smoothly passes into fiction.
