Lespeki Mama

Documentary, 1994, 65 min.

Portrait of the Creole grandma Doorson and her three daughters who live in Surinam and Holland. The film provides a picture of the culture and problems of Surinamese/Creole women in Holland. In three separate parts, it tackles issues such as the unconscious passing on of role patterns, matriarchal versus patriarchal family structures, the idealisation of Holland and Surinam, the Winti cult versus Christianity, emigration and split nationality. Lespeki Mama sketches the mood of Surinam and Holland. For centuries, both countries were linked together and one can argue that the umbilical cord was never really cut.
