De dorst van leer

Short documentary, 1994, 50 min.

Documentary about the leather industry in the Indian province of Madras. In the nineties, leather has become one of India's most important export products. However the environment has to pay an spiralling price for this economic development in the form of increasing water and soil pollution and dehydration of the earth. Tanning one hide takes forty litres of water and many chemicals. It is therefore no surprise that the local people, many of whom work in the leather industry itself, suffer from a water shortage and health problems. Leather: the Unquenchable Thirst portrays several employees and the director of a large leather factory in Madras. Pressured by his customers, the leather manufacturer is one of the first to take measures to protect the environment.
