Zonnestraal, drempels tussen lucht en aarde

Short documentary, 1994, 59 min.

Documentary about the former TB sanatorium Zonnestraal, built from the money earned with copper handles, a waste product of the diamond industry. Commissioned by the inspired trade union man Jan van Zutphen and the chairman of the General Dutch Diamond Workers' Union Henri Polak, the architect Jan Duiker designed a sanatorium in the 1920s combining healing, living and working. Socialist ideals were united in Duiker's sanatorium with the ideas of clarity and technology of New Building. In the 1950s, the building was robbed of its original function and it decayed slowly but surely. The documentary brings the story of Zonnestraal briefly back to life using archive footage and the stories of people involved.
