I Have a Problem Madam

Short documentary, 1995, 59 min.

Documentary about the work of FIDA Uganda, an organisation of woman lawyers fighting for the rights of Ugandan women. Men and women may be equal before the law, traditionally women are men's property and this leads to increasing conflicts in Ugandan society. Problems surrounding inheritance, maltreatment and forced marriages are common and sometimes lead to murder and (wo)manslaughter. Maarten Schmidt and Thomas Doebele filmed for several weeks in a law shop where FIDA lawyers give free advice to women who want justice. They also visit a remote mountain village and follow the trial of a woman who killed her husband in desperation.
