Soldaat van Oranje - Revisited

Documentary, 2002, 65 min.

25 years ago, Paul Verhoeven's Soldier of Orange had its première. Director Frank Krom, who made his debut as Verhoeven's assistant on Spetters, interviews members of the cast and crew, critics and writer Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema about the large-scale war book adaptation and shows many excerpts from the film, as well as unique footage shot on the set. Actors Rutger Hauer, Jeroen Krabbé and Derek de Lint and producer Rob Houwer gladly reminisce about the shooting days, though they were far from easy. The actors had signed a contract for a maximum working week of seven times twenty-four hours; in the end, everybody was on the verge of exhaustion. During quarrels, food flew across the table. Krabbé explains how Verhoeven wanted to continue shooting even when an extra was lying in the street bleeding. When the film was released, many Dutch criticisms were negative, but positive reactions in the United States paved the road to Hollywood for Verhoeven and Hauer.
