Kinky Friedman. Proud to Be an Asshole from El Paso

Short documentary, 2001, 54 min.

Kinky Friedman is a Jewish Texan country singer, founder of The Texas Jewboys and author of fourteen hilarious detective stories about Kinky Friedman, the Jewish Texan country singer and detective. Friedman caused a furore - and bred bad blood - with controversial songs like Ride 'em Jewboy (the first country song about the Holocaust). Simone de Vries made a portrait of this irresistibly unconventional cult hero, for example in his rickety trailer, where his success as a writer began. In addition to Friedman, some of his admirers appear in the film, like Lyle Lovett, country legend Willie Nelson (the protagonist of one of his novels) and Bill Clinton, who explains how Friedman once offered him one of his inevitable Cuban cigars. Due to the boycott, Clinton could not accept the cigar, to which Friedman said: 'Don't see it as supporting their economy, but as burning their crops.'
