Willem Breuker "Time Is an Empty Bottle of Wine"

Documentary, 2000, 70 min.

Many critics felt that Willem Breuker's anarchistic performance at the 1966 Loosdrecht jazz festival marked the end of music. But since then, the enfant terrible of Dutch jazz has been proving that the sky is the limit. In the roadmovie Willem Breuker, "Time Is an Empty Bottle of Wine", director Netty van Hoorn follows the unruly composer and band leader with his ten-man Kollektief on tours across the United States and Europe. She also interviews Breuker at home, where in his 'nursery' some five hundred compositions are stored. On archive footage, we see a young Breuker playing a composition on four barrel organs on the Amsterdam Dam Square. An organ grinder later shakes his head and says: 'Either that man is crazy or he is a genius.' Of course, the film is accompanied by a superb soundtrack, varying from avant-garde noise to popular gaiety.
