Het Oogziekenhuis

Documentary, 2010, 60 min.

The Rotterdam Eye Hospital not only enjoys global renown medically, but also attracts attention with its special interior. It is the hospital?s philosophy to take away the patients? fears as much as possible by creating an environment with abundant light and colour, distinctive art and poetic texts.
We follow five patients, including a baby with congenital cataract, an elderly lady with a tumour of the eyelid and a man that gets a cornea transplant. In extreme close-ups, we observe the miraculous precision work performed here. The operating table is manned by four nationalities. Meanwhile, eye specialists and their assistants talk about their work and the importance of commitment. Designers and a sound artist demonstrate how they turned the old hospital into a little art palace. The children?s eye doctor calls it a warm nest where everybody knows each other, from the cleaning woman to the managing director.
