Nostalgia? A Tango Road Movie

Documentary, 2002, 55 min.

Since his performance at the wedding of Dutch heir apparent Willem-Alexander and Máxima, bandoneón player Carel Kraayenhof's star has been rising. It was the crowning glory of the career of Kraayenhof, who had been playing the Latin-American tango for fifteen years. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of tango legend Astor Piazzolla's death in July 2002, Kraayenhof and his Sexteto Canyengue travel to Argentina, where his success has not gone by unnoticed either. Director Wouter Hasebos follows him to a bankrupt country that apparently does not have much reason for celebration. But nothing will keep the Argentineans from relishing the tango. As in a musical road movie, Kraayenhof begins a quest for the essence of the tango, which involves nostalgia, homesickness and displacement. He performs, meets leading Argentinean musicians and pays a visit to a school he collected money for in the Netherlands.
