Villa vluchteling

Documentary, 2005, 72 min.

Director Nousjka Thomas follows a family from the Gooi area that takes the Angolan refugee Santana (18) under its wings. He sleeps in the refugee centre, hoping for a residence permit, and regularly visits Margot and Ronald's beautiful villa. The idea to take him in comes from Margot, who teaches at the refugee centre. She convinced her husband Ronald and children Steven (17) and Rosanne (14). But the family members do not hide the resulting quarrels, caustic remarks and tears. Rosanne even says, when her mother has promised that the family will always consists of four people, not five: 'That's on tape now!' Thomas captures the contrast between the refugee centre and the chic villa, follows the family (with Santana) to the hockey pitch and the skiing hall, and attends the settlement of Santana's appeal against deportation. She interviews the family members together and separately and also speaks with Margot's hesitant mother and stepfather. Santana himself is mainly reticent, which leaves room for doubt as far as his story goes.
