Wargames

Short documentary, 1997, 50 min.

Part two of a series of documentaries made by film-maker Jan van den Berg in co-operation with psychiatrist Joop de Jong about how people come to terms with war traumas in different cultures. The civil war that has been waging in Sudan since 1989 means that the neighbouring country of Ethiopia has become a refuge for many Sudanese women and children. In a special refugee camp in Addis Ababa aid workers try to help children, among them Nyachom (11), to cope with their traumatic experiences. There they practice their 'Wargames'; youth theatre in which soldiers armed with wooden rifles make countless 'victims'. We also meet Eunice Laku, a representative of the Sudanese Women's Voice, that wants to help adults and mediates in peace negotiations. The women hope in this way to make the children's wargames unnecessary.
