Wie Eegie Sanie / Onze eigen dingen

Short documentary, 2003, 58 min.

IThis documentary portrays a generation of Surinamese people who were the first to explore their roots and culture, or 'wie eegie sanie': our own things. In this awakening process, the society Wie Eegie Sanie (WES), founded in 1950 in Amsterdam, and its initiator, the lawyer, politician and writer Eddy Bruma, played a key role. WES primarily identified its 'own' culture with the Afro-American and African culture. This was chiefly looked for in the Surinam language, Sranan Tongo, and in the Surinam history. In the film, the rehearsals are followed of the renewed performance of the play The Birth of Boni, which is paramount to the history of Suriname and a tribute to the maroons' resistance in the colonial era.
