At a filling station, a couple is brutally murdered and robbed of some documents. Police inspector Daerden drives to the scene of the crime. He is also beaten to the ground but is able to start the investigation that same night. He innocently finds himself in the midst of a web of political intrigue, corruption and blackmail. Le Bal Masqué is inspired by a series of murders with which the Nijvel Gang terrorised Belgium in the 1980s.
