Klein Italië in Delft

Short documentary, 2002, 38 min.

Some three hundred Italians are living in Delft, immigrant workers from the sixties. Director Tonino Boniotti interviewed a group of Italian men in their illegally laid out allotments. They grow vegetables there and prepare dishes from their native part of Italy. Most of them are married to Dutch women, but here they can talk in Italian about the condition of the peas. They can also talk the Italian way: as elderly machos, they brag about their sweet peppers. With their home-made wine and common solidarity, they have created their own Little Italy. The illegal gardens were tolerated for a long time, but now they have to make room for an industrial estate. The question is what will happen to the men. As one of them remarks: `I can rent another kitchen garden, but I will never find the same freedom.'
