Beter dan leven

Short documentary, 2006, 50 min.

Flemish actor and dramatist Josse de Pauw considers the theatre a safe place, he tells in front of documentary-maker Britta Hosman's camera. Hosman registered the materialisation of the controversial, experimental play Volk that, despite scathing criticism, was performed to sold-out houses by Toneelhuis Antwerpen under the direction of De Pauw. The search for the right form, the occasionally arduous contact with the actors, the digestion of the devastating criticism - it is all captured in a meticulous and sometimes painfully confrontational way. The players of the Toneelhuis also appear to be in the dark as to what De Pauw exactly envisages with his play. The registrations are alternated with interviews with De Pauw, explaining his views on drama, the theatre world and the great wicked world outside. 'In the theatre you can show yourself. I would never do that outside.'
