Indonesie in wording

Short documentary, 1995, 50 min.

Compilation of photos and film footage by Cas Oorthuys and Charles Breijer, looking at the decolonisation of Indonesia and Dutch military attempts to delay it. In early 1947 the photographer Oorthuys and filmmaker Breijer travelled to Indonesia. Only two years after they had illegally recorded the consequences of Germany occpuation, the decolonisation of Indonesia again posed the dilemma for them of which side they were on and who they were working for. Oorthuys put together the photo book Een staat in wording, a plea for a peaceful solution expressing his support for the Republic of Indonesia. Breijer worked on newsreels and made information films for audiences back home. Between 1950 and 1953 he worked as cameraman in the retinue of president Sukarno.
