Rotterdam een ongemakkelijk sprookje

Feature film, 2001, 60 min.

Two artists from Rotterdam, Lydia Schouten and Gina Kranendonk, take a fresh look at the city they both love and hate. Discarding the classical distinction between fiction film and documentary, they took one year, from winter to winter, to examine the places and people that make Rotterdam such an ambivalent love. Leitmotifs are the city's parks and gardens, which they capture in many forms and with which they, when necessary, personally interfere, and Schouten's search for a man. She is aided by Kranendonk, whose own heart is `full' of a man and two children. The protagonists are a Mr. Frits and an extraordinary owner of a town garden. Filmed with a handheld camera, the seemingly loose fragments are kept together by the personalities of the two makers, accompanying the viewer both on-screen and in the voice-over.
