The best trees in the world come from the forested area around Lake Lillooet in British Columbia, Canada. For several years a fierce debate has been taking place about cutting timber in this remote and hostile area. Several interested parties are involved: wood cutters, Indians, environmental activists and tourist industry. In Falling, film-maker Thijs Bayens follows the life and work of several people involved. Timber magnate Steve Phare is the central figure. He is preparing for new challenge. Alongside the contradictory interests of those involved, Phare himself is a paradoxical figure. He cuts down trees, but loves the forest. He despises the Indians, but himself has Indian blood. The forests have a spiritual meaning for the Indians. Deforestation is the loss of their age-old stories and also the loss of their culture.
