Het verloren paradijs

Documentary, 2008, 62 min.

As a child, you take your time to watch the melting snow. Or to examine seemingly worthless treasures closer. A top, for example, or a lock that has been snipped through. Or to immensely enjoy a coupe of ice cream, like the young woman in the film still does. As a girl, her father already took her to an ice-cream parlour, where she spooned up her first strawberry sherbet. And she still frequents her familiar parlour. 'How many ice-cream parlours does Holland actually have?', she wonders. One sunny summer, she starts looking for the answer. She calls on all parlours that are named after Venice - from Leeuwarden to Utrecht and from Zeist to Oss. Every time she eats, clearly enjoying it, a fancy ice cream. Products with resounding names like Coupe Da Vinci, Coupe Amarena or Melone. Meanwhile, she tells with wonder about the history of the places she visits. We also see images of the roads that lead to the different ice-cream parlours. A crash barrier, a vast polder, bridges and trains. Sometimes, she gets off to peer at the Dutch scenery.
