The Crisis and Us

Feature film, 2009, 94 min.

Reality and imagination intermingle in The Crisis and Us, a film full of crisis-related stories about people from Tokyo, Reykjavik, Buenos Aires, Berlin and Barcelona. The crisis has a different impact on each of them: one does not dare leave his office for fear of being fired, the other is jubilant because the subsidies for bullfighting are cancelled, a third mourns for the breast lift she can no longer afford. Visually, the film consists of short observations, usually of people in the street or in the public space. A voice-over dives into their thoughts or tells the absurd story behind a fascinating object or strange situation. By looking at the current crisis from the perspective of street vendors, bank clerks and other world citizens, director Johan Kramer emphasises its complexity. In passing, he incorporates figures and studies in the tragicomic narrative style. In the only sequence that is not in black-and-white, a scientist turns to the colour theory to find the colour of 2009: crisis blue.
